The Push to Grow More Food in Canada

This picture relates to the article as it shows a farmer upset about his farm because he can’t produce any food to sell to make money from. There is a lot of pressure on farmers to produce food that they can sell as they are competing against foreign producers. Many people are buying imported food instead of locally grown because it is cheaper.  People are able to get seasonal food year-round now because of the advanced technology.

This article is about the pressure to grow more food in Canada. There is only 20% of food is now grown in Ontario compared to the 80% produced in the 70s and 80s. Food is being imported from different countries, as it is cheaper than buying locally. Also, seasonal food is available in Canada year-round because of advanced technology. I have learned in this article that most people choose not to buy locally because it is cheaper to buy imported food from different countries. Also, there is less food being produced in Canada because of the loss of farms due to development.

One interesting thing that I have learned from this article is that our food travels 4,000 kilometers to reach our tables and most of us are unaware of this. The fact that more Canadians are showing greater interests in what they eat as there have been an organic movement to buy food free of chemicals and also a movement to buy more locally grown food is something positive thing from this article. However, a negative thing from this article is that Canadians have stopped growing their own food and many farms have been lost because they were not making enough money. A connection I can make about food security is that if food prices increase many people will not be able to afford to purchase it, as they might not have the funds to do so. Also, if Canada losses most of their farms Canadians will have to depend on food from other countries, which will lose nutritional value when it reaches them.
